The Mapungubwe Rock Art Safari tour

It is believed that Mapungubwe was the forerunner of the Great Zimbabwe civilisation. It was on the top of Mapungubwe Hill that the royalty lived and were buried, while it is estimated that up to 5000 people lived around Mapungubwe hill at that time.

The landscape also includes the site where the first known Bantu settlement was established in South Africa in the 9th Century, when the Zinzho people migrated South from East Africa. Prior to that the area was occupied by the San people, who were nomad hunters & gatherers, from about 4000 years ago and the Khoikhoi people, who were nomadic herders from up to 2000 years ago. Both these peoples left legacies of wonderful rock art in this area.
